An Indian wedding is rarely one event. Between the haldi, the mehendi, the sangeet, the wedding itself and the reception, a guest may need four or five looks — each with its own mood and dress code.
Here is how to dress for each function so you look celebratory, feel comfortable and never upstage the couple.
Haldi and mehendi: light, bright and easy
Daytime functions call for breathable fabrics and cheerful colours. Yellow, green, pink and orange are traditional, and florals or prints feel right in daylight.
A cotton or georgette kurta set, a light anarkali or a printed suit lets you sit on the floor, dance and get a little haldi on you without worry.
Sangeet: dress to dance
The sangeet is the most fun to dress for. A flared lehenga, a twirl-worthy gown or an indo-western set works beautifully. Mirror work, sequins and gota catch the stage lights.
Pick something you can move in: check that the skirt length clears your shoes and that the blouse lets you raise your arms.
The wedding day: rich, but not bridal
For the ceremony, silk sarees, heavier lehengas and embroidered anarkalis are all right. Jewel tones — emerald, royal blue, wine, mustard — feel celebratory and photograph well.
Avoid the bride’s colour if you know it, and in most families avoid all-white and all-black for the wedding itself.
For the wedding day
Reception: evening glamour
Receptions are usually the most formal and the most modern. A shimmering saree, a sleek gown or a lehenga in a deeper colour fits the mood. This is also where black, midnight blue and metallics are welcome.
Let one element lead: a statement necklace with a simple outfit, or a heavily worked outfit with small earrings.
Questions, answered
What colours should a wedding guest avoid in India?
Avoid the bride’s colour if you know it (often red), and in many families avoid all-white or all-black for the wedding ceremony itself. Black and metallics are usually fine for an evening reception.
What should I wear to a haldi ceremony?
Light, washable fabrics in yellow, green or other bright colours: a cotton kurta set, a printed suit or a light anarkali. Expect to sit on the floor and get a little haldi on you.
Can I wear a lehenga as a wedding guest?
Yes. A lehenga is ideal for the sangeet and the wedding day. Choose a colour that is not the bride’s and keep the embellishment a step below bridal.
